The massive uptake of cellular and WiFi as a communication channel has increased the risk that bad players will use these channels for nefarious purposes. Whereas in the past the technology to intercept these signals was bulky, massively expensive and hard to get hold of, today the availability of cheap hardware means that for a few hundred dollar someone with some knowledge can build a small device that can intercept communications.
